Post Award Toolkit: Effective Meetings The PI Meeting • Spend time the day before the meeting preparing • Invite the key players • Create an agenda • Start and end your meeting on time • Come with questions and let them speak (You never know what information you don’t know if you aren’t listening!) • Silence is NOT awkward. • Come with solutions. Don’t present a problem to the PI without some options for solving it • Create a to-do list based on meeting notes • Follow up and set next meeting time
Post Award Toolkit: Simple Spreadsheets What information does the PI Need on a monthly projection? • Is there any money outstanding from the sponsor that will increase the budget? • Have all charges that hit this account (salaries, supplies, subcontracts) been deemed appropriate and correct? • What are we expecting to spend during the budget year? • What’s the bottom line?
Post Award Toolkit: Building Relationships • Start off on the right foot with your PIs • Show an active interest in their work • Build relationships with lab staff/administrative staff/collaborators • Use the PIs time wisely • Be prepared • Make allowances • Rebuild relationships after challenges • Don’t take it personal if the PI goes to your Manager • Be personal and personable
