  4. Our School Mission and Values Statement • At Welldon Park Primary, we believe that high achievement takes place in the framework of high expectations. We aim to serve our community by providing an education of the highest quality for children. We work closely with all of our families to ensure that children’s unique, individual talents are developed and celebrated.

  6. Phonics and handwriting • Over this year some of the children will be revisiting the Read Write Inc Phonics scheme • All children will be practising joined handwriting every day.

  8. English: We follow the Primary National Strategy. This year we will be covering; • Instructions • Poetry • Myths and Fables • Stories by the same author • Investigating non fiction texts • Mystery stories • Performance poetry • And many more...

Reading: • The teachers in our school strive to hear the children read as much as possible in a variety of activities. • This can be done through reading questions or extracts and texts in English lessons. • Guided reading. • Individual reading. We cannot emphasise enough the importance of you listening to your child read as much as possible.

Learning outcomes for the end of Year 3 in English: Speaking and Listening: • Listen and respond appropriately to adults and their peers • Ask relevant questions to extend their understanding and knowledge • Use relevant strategies to build their vocabulary Reading: • Apply their growing knowledge of root words, prefixes and suffixes • both to read aloud and to understand the meaning of new words that they meet • Develop positive attitudes to reading and understanding of what they read • Understand what they read, in books they can read independently Writing: • Plan their writing • Draft and write • Evaluate and edit • extending the range of sentences with more than one clause by using a wider range of conjunctions, including when, if, because, although • using fronted adverbials • Indicate grammatical and other features • using commas after fronted adverbials

  11. Numeracy The Primary Framework strands of learning that we follow are; • Using and applying mathematics • Counting and understanding numbers • Knowing and using number facts • Calculating • Understanding shapes • Measuring • Handling Data

  12. Times tables: • Over the course of the year the children will be beginning to learn their 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 times tables.

Welldon Park Curriculum- Year 3 Science • Rocks • What do rocks tell us about the way the Earth was formed? • Plants • How did that blossom become an apple? • Light and Shadow • How far can I throw my shadow? • Animals including Humans • How do animals help the world? • Forces and Magnets • How can Usain Bolt move so quickly?

  15. Homework: There will be homework set every week which will comprise of grammar, spellings and maths. The homework is handed out on a Thursday and is due in the following Tuesday. The spellings are based upon key words, high frequency words or the phonics the children will be learning in that week.

  16. How can you help your child at home? English: • By reading a variety of texts and discussing them, pointing out the key features. • Practising reading and the spelling of high frequency words regularly. • Playing verbal games with words, creating stories, creating characters and orally describing items.

  17. How can you help your child at home? Reading • Children will have the opportunity to change their reading book each day. Please make sure you sign the reading records if you have heard your child read at home. • Children will be encouraged to read at their own level & pace. • Please don’t feel that your child has to read ‘war and peace’ each night! • Please encourage a wide range of reading at home to stimulate your child’s imagination. Remember – your child doesn’t always have to read to you.

How can you help your child at home? continued Numeracy: • By making sure the children are confident of their number bonds. • Working with them to improve their accuracy in adding 2 and 3 digit numbers together in their heads, on a number line and later on in a column addition. • Understanding about numbers being greater than or less than other numbers. • Counting accurately and being confident with numbers up to 1000.

  19. School trips • You will be informed of school trips as soon as they are booked and approved. • A letter will be sent home • School trips are educational and part of your child’s learning • Children will only be allowed on a trip if the school has written permission from parents
