What does AMTC do? • Official Mission: To provide Alaskans with the skills and technical knowledge to enable them to be productive in our continually evolving maritime industry. • Unofficial Mission: To prevent the next big one. • NAMEPA’s Mission: To Save The Seas
What Does It Take To Work On The Water? • You need a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) • It does not require any previous sea time or vessel experience! • It will take TIME, PERSISTENCE, and some paperwork. • First you will have to get a TWIC credential • You will have to get a special physicalexam. • Get & pass a “DOT 5 Panel” or a “SAMHSA 5 Panel” drug test • Fill out this application for a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) • Pay the MMC processing & issuance fee • Estimated Costs to become an entry level mariner$400-500 • AMTC is pursuing a TWIC center on AVTEC’s Seward campus

Ice Navigation • Orson P. Smith, PE, Ph.D. (UAA School of Engineering) • Captain John Schibel (Alaska Marine Pilots) • Captain Mike Terminel (Edison Chouest) • Captain Scott Hamilton (AMTC) • LCDR Robert Thomas (USCG Ret., AMTC) • USCG Approved • First/Only school in US to have an Ice course
AMTC Ice Navigation Curriculum • Ice Physics • Ice Classification • Ice Climatology • Remote Sensing • Ice Forces • Air and Sea Interactions with Ice • Ice Piloting in Remote Polar Waters • Pollution
AMTC Ice Navigation Curriculum • IMO/STCW requirements evolving • Alaska and US Arctic marine policies evolving • AMTC curriculum in development now • Alaska pilot associations are directly involved • Expanded navigation in Alaska and adjacent international Arctic waters calls for training of more ice navigators • AMTC is preparing to meet these training needs • Simulator intensive course will be very hands-on • Alaska is the only state north of 60 Degrees Latitude, so training should be conducted in Alaska.
AMTC Fire Training Facility • 2-story marine specific fire trainer with 2 live fire props • Large outside live fire prop • Confined space trainer • Turnouts and SCBAs for up to 20 students • NFPA Standards
AMTC Ship Bridge Simulators • 3 Full Mission Interactive Bridges • 6 Part Mission Interactive Bridges • 42 Hydrodynamic Vessel Models • Highly accurate and detailed area databases covering major ports in and outside Alaska
Tugging and Towing • Interactive Bridges • Escort Maneuvers • ASD and VS Tugs • Offshore Towing
Ice Simulation • Ice operations on interactive bridges • Hydrodynamicallyacurate ship models • Bergs, Hummock, First-year, Multi-year any thickness • Create and follow leads
Development at AMTC • Model ports and harbors • Trial runs prior to permitting/construction • Simulator-based planning sessions • Meetings with simulator trials prior to new vessel movements or policy implementation • Satisfy stake holders • Vessel owners, captains, pilots, tug operators, shore-side managers, regulators, etc.
AMTC Navigation Lab • Navigation and Communication Lab • 6 interactive bridges • Radar, ARPA, ECDIS, piloting, GMDSS
Future: AMTC Training Potential for Arctic Drilling Preparedness • Safety • Fire • Ice • Ship Bridge • Towing • Engineering • Dynamic Positioning • Offshore Vessels • Crane
AVTEC is Workforce Developmentfor Arctic Drilling Preparedness • More than Alaska Maritime Training Center, AVTEC is • Nursing • Diesel/Heavy Equipment • Industrial Electrical • Welding • Refrigeration/Plumbing/Heating • Information Technology • Culinary • AVTEC resources are available to industry • Instructional Staff • Classrooms, Labs, and Simulators • Custom curriculum development
