Chapter 4: Section 3Egypt and Nubia Trade in Ancient Egypt • Egypt was rich in sunshine and fertile soil but lacked forests, minerals, horses, and other natural resources. • Commerce is the buying and selling of goods and services. • Trade gave Egypt access to goods it would not otherwise have and brought Egypt and Nubia together Trade in the Eastern Mediterranean • Egypt bought cedar wood, olive oil, and metals such as tin and copper Trade in the Nile Valley • Egypt bought gold and elephant tusks from Nubia • Egyptians sold grain, cloth, papyrus, glass, and jewelry • Trade created interdependence
The Land of Nubia • Geography: received very little rainfall, surrounded by desert, depended on the Nile River • The Nile’s cataracts made it impossible to travel very far by boat. • Nubia had much less land to farm than Egypt. • Shortage of food made them eager to trade • Closer contact to people of Africa south of the Sahara desert.

Nubia Conquers Egypt • In the mid 700’s BCE, a Nubian king conquered the Egyptian city of Thebes. • Piye expanded the Nubian empire • Pharaohs form Nubia ruled Egypt for almost 100 years. • Tried to expand their power and went to war with the Assyrians in the Fertile Crescent. • Assyrian troops conquered Egypt in 665 BCE and eventually Nubia retreated from Egypt to Nubia.
Nubian Civilization • Remained an advanced civilization for almost a thousand years after it lost Egypt • Developed its own system of writing, economy, and government Independent Nubia • Turned Meroe into Africa’s first ironworking center • Created the Meroitic script- one of the world’s first alphabets
Nubia’s Links to Africa and the World • exported iron goods, cloth, and gold • imported ebony, black wood from West Africa, and elephant tusks • Traded with Greek and Roman Egypt • 200’s AD war with the Roman empire weakened Nubia • Desert people invaded • 300’s AD kingdom of Aksum conquered • Nubia linked Africa south of the Sahara with other ancient civilizations
