NACHRI Networking Lunch Safe Kids Worldwide Leadership Conference October 16, 2008 Beverly Miller, MEd
Background What We Know • Motor vehicle injury remains the leading cause of death for children in the US • Ample evidence supports the use of appropriate restraints for each age, size, and developmental stage • Children in rural communities are at particularly high risk What We Don’t Know • How can we increase booster seat use to comply with best practices and/or state laws? • Can motor vehicle safety be incorporated into existing community-based activities? • Can a low-cost intervention be implemented in rural and small towns where there are limited resources for safety interventions?
Why a Baseball Connection ? • Small towns and rural areas • Compact time frame • Established gathering of target population • Crosses gender, race, income • Coaches recognized as leaders with best interest of children • Injury prevention is already incorporated in baseball programs
Current Study • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funding • 3 year project • Goal: To test effectiveness of model • Non-randomized, control trial • Sample: ~2,000 children < 15 years and ~2,200 adults • Restraint will be assessed and corrected for ~ 1,000 children
PY 1 Accomplishments • Version 1 of implementation guide produced • Evaluation protocols developed and approved • AR pilot community went from 0 CPS technicians to 6 technicians with permanent fitting station • Meeting of national sites in September 2007
Plans for sustainability • Continue as a service project • Replication: other sports, activities • Implementation package to include tailored materials, implementation guide
