Process • Monitored Hurricane Advisories • Monitored NC evacuation activities • Monitored traffic flow on RT 168 into the Tidewater area from NC Outer Banks • Reviewed projected Storm Surge levels • Multiple conference calls with state agencies - i.e. VSP, VDOT & others, localities and NWS
Process Continued • Governor conveyed authority for Mandatory Evacuations to coastal localities • Hurricane intensity weakened before/during evacuation activities by localities
Lessons Learned • Evacuations relatively low • Any out of area evacuations were into the projected path of Isabel • At landfall ROW expanded farther than anticipated • Winds influenced increased storm surge activity

Ongoing Activities • Proposal to install ramp gates along Interstate 64 – Approx. 80 miles • Proposal to establish guidelines for critical bridge and tunnel facility closures during tropical events
