Beyond Dialogue: From Conformity to Liberating Learning Philomena Essed Antioch University, PhD Program in Leadership and Change
Overvaluation of Cognitive intellect • Merit and Measurement culture • Conformity and Homogeneity
Liberating Learning • From Merit to Human Dignity
Conformity culture excludes those who not fit a standardized image of the professional intellectual
Non-conformity • Reflection • Experience • Liberation
Reflection (critical understanding of culture and power) • and Experiential learning (relating own experience to theory/research) • as a basis for Liberating growth (integrating individuality and connectivity)
Experience needs a place in academia: learning is permanent and multifaceted
Liberating faculty from measurement culture
Different approach to academia and scholarship Whole person central: Multiple experiences and identifications
No faculty or student profile (no measurement and fitting into a pre-shaped model) • Critical reflections on (own) cultures and power • Non-conformity automatically attracts diversity in all respects • Experiential learning (cognitive, social, emotional) • Meritocracy nurtures standardization and homogenization • Homogeneity is a myth – no human being exactly the same as another • ‘Other’ is a myth: no human being/group is totally different from others • (Shared) Experience and empathy as a basis for human connectivity • Leading students and learning can/should be liberating for all parties involved
