  1. WK 1: hydrogeological characterisation and modelling at SKMS catchment scale Michel BAKALOWICZ HydroSciences, CNRS, Partner # 2 Wajdi NAJEM CREEN, USJ Beyrouth, Partner #9 MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Wajdi NAJEM

  2. 1. Hydrogeological characterisation of recharge areas • Inventory of the main coastal karst aquifers in each country • Selection of the most interesting aquifers • Hydrogeological characterisation of the selected coastal karst aquifers • Selection of 1 or 2 sites for experimentation MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Wajdi NAJEM

  3. Inventory of the main coastal karst aquifers in each country (1) • Main goal : to synthetise all information data on coastal carbonate aquifers and their possible discharge in the sea by KSMS. • Working approach : • Listing and sumarising all types of documents, scientific papers, thesis, reports, with a special effort on documents in Arabic. • All informations should be placed in their geological framework. MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Wajdi NAJEM

  4. Inventory of the main coastal karst aquifers in each country (2) • Final documents : • A map locating the main coastal karst aquifers, comprising those coated with non carbonate sediments, the main coastal fresh or brackish springs, and the KSMS. • A data base with all informations on KSMS : coordinates, geological situation, references, exploration methods, quantitative data (water composition, isotopes, flow rate, temperature, salinity), experiments and taping attempts. • A complete bibliographical list, with a synthetic abstract especially for all documents in Arabic. MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Wajdi NAJEM

  5. Selection of 1 or 2 sites for experimentation • The hydrogeological assessment will be crossed with the economical and social approach in order to determine the most interesting(s) aquifers. • One or two aquifers with KSMS will be selected for complete investigations. MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Wajdi NAJEM

  6. Hydrogeological characterisation of the selected coastal karst aquifers (1) • Delineation of the presumed recharge area by geological and morphological approaches, • Analysis of palaeo-surfaces using NEM with GIS techniques, dating the surfaces, • Determination of successive base (sea) levels MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Wajdi NAJEM

  7. Hydrogeological characterisation of the selected coastal karst aquifers (2) • Inventory of springs, karst features • Approach of the hydrological balance in order to assess the mean annual discharge of the KSMS, • Intrisic vulnerability assessment MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Wajdi NAJEM

  8. Hydrogeological characterisation of the selected coastal karst aquifers (3) • Mapping the aquifer vulnerability with a method specific to karst aquifers • Integration of all data into the GIS connected to the DSS • Definition of conceptual models describing the functioning of the selected aquifers MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Wajdi NAJEM

  9. 2. Numerical hydrological modelling of recharge areas • 2 kinds of modelling used according to the data: • Lumped parameter models (black or grey box models, reservoir type model) • Distributed parameter models • Reservoir type model is being tested with VENSIM simulator MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Wajdi NAJEM

  10. WP 1 planning (1) • Month 1 to 6 : development of the data base, inventory of the main karst coastal aquifers • Months 7 to 9 : selection of the most interesting aquifers, definition of the taping methodology MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Wajdi NAJEM

  11. WP 1 planning (2) • Months 10 to 20 : hydrogeological characterisation of the selected coastal karst aquifers • Months 20 to 30 : numerical modelling on each system MEDITATE Kick off meeting, Montpellier, Michel BAKALOWICZ & Wajdi NAJEM
