FT Standing Committee Meeting 1) Briefed FTSC on March AdCom meeting. Negotiations concerning technical co-sponsorship of TOFE/SOFE between ANS and IEEE have ended. ANS did not think it was in their best interest to approve the MOUs required by IEEE for technical co-sponsorship. 2) The chair has appointed John Sethian to the Fusion Technology Steering Committee and congratulated him on his recent election. FTSC currently has 13 voting members. 3) A discussion ensued on the need for a policy for requiring SOFE speakers to submit a manuscript to the conference proceedings. In the past, a growing number of plenary and invited speakers have not provided a manuscript for the CD. The conference publication chairs will set a detailed policy for each conference. But the consensus of the committee was that a draft manuscript or presentation must be provided to the technical program committee by the start of the conference and this requirement will be stipulated in the speaker’s invitation. The review cycle for the TPS special issue completed on December 31. 78 papers were submitted for the special 24th SOFE issue to be released in March. Thirty-eight (49%) papers made it to the special issue. Seven papers will appear in later issues, and eight are still under review for later issues. Four were rejected; four were withdrawn, and 17 requiring revision were not resubmitted. Each of the four guest editors managed about 19 papers and were not overburdened. An issue was identified concerning the scheduled e-mail releases from the scholar-one manuscript site. The frequency of the auto-generated messages did not conform to the compressed special-issue schedule.
FT Standing Committee Meeting 4) Wayne Meier provided an update on publicity and preparations for SOFE2013. Wayne will send out the first announcement via e-mail and has compiled a comprehensive e-mail list from multiple sources. Hutch Neilson has a draft program schedule and is finalizing the program committee. Hutch is searching for a publications chair. Please consider volunteering. 5) The chair discussed the status of SOFE2015 for J.P. Allain. SOFE2015 (26th SOFE) will be collocated with the Pulsed Power Conference (PPC) in Austin, TX. A contract was negotiated and signed using IEEE MCM services with the Hilton, Austin. The guaranteed room rate is $199/night. JP made a site visit in December. JP is attempting to involve UT-Austin in the local organization. A technical program chair has yet to be identified. JP is working to get the conference on the IEEE schedule. b) An MOU between PPST and FTC is in progress to clearly define the cost sharing between the conferences while each maintains a separate budget. 6a) The chair is in the last year of his term that expires in December 2012. Please consider nominations for a new chair. b) Chair will contact inactive FTSC members to re-evaluate their interest in serving on the FTSC. Those missing three consecutive meetings or calls will be dropped. 7) New language for the Fusion Technology award was offered by Tiana and Chas to make the details surrounding the award frequency crystal clear. The next meeting will be via teleconference the week of July 16, 2012.
