Attractions and importance of ENUM • Enables to use a single E164 number to access different applications • Accessed from both circuit switching network and IP based network (including Internet) • Promote the convergence of PSTN and IP • Act as an important role in the next generation network • Bring great impact to the traditional telecommunication network

  4. Requirements issued • Correct use and effective management of E.164 numbering resource • Quality of Services provided through ENUM should be ensured

  5. A possible solution • To establish a new TLD(e.g. e164) special for ENUM implementation and make an international, neutral and fair organization (e.g. ITU-T) to administer the new TLD.

  6. Advantages comparing to using “e164.arpa” • Reduce one level of address resolution and speed up the resolution • No consensus about it • Promote the rationalization of traffic distribution in Internet • Be propitious to establish a more logical management mechanism

  7. Current situation for this possibility • No consensus • A correspondence group has been established to develop a document on the information required to request a new TLD. • The related work is going on.
