ROLE AND FUNCTIONSDeploy ito Sec 18 (1) (d) Def Act) • Conduct mobile/foot patrols • Observation and listening posts • Standing patrols • Vehicle control points • Reaction force and follow up operations (to include extended border area) • Depth operations, ie, roadblocks, 20 Kms to the rear of the borderline in conjunction with the SAPS. • Intelligence operations (collection of information) RESTRICTED

  3. OPERATIONAL ISSUES • PHASED APPROACH TO BE FOLLOWED • NEW GENERATION VEHICLE REQUIRED • TRANSFER OF OPERATIONAL BASES FROM SAPS • COMMAND AND CONTROL SYSTEMS (COMMS) REQUIRED RESTRICTED

INFRASTRUCTURE CHALLENGES • For the main the Ops bases transferred to the SAPS are in good condition and only require refurbishment* • Water system. • Sewerage system. • Kitchen and Messes *. • NABOB fence requires major repair. • Sections of border access road requires major repair. • 3 x Ops bases in KNP no longer available. • Communication infrastructure to be re-established. • New generation vehicle to be developed. • 2 x Ops bases in the Eastern Cape not deemed appropriate ito of distances and the new operational concept (high mobility). • At least one new Ops base to be established in the Free State. (Maintain strategic mobility in future) • Individual soldier equipment to be reviewed. RESTRICTED

Recommendations Based upon FY10/11 RM135 Support to the People Budget and upon SWC2010 support (RM235) being separately funded: • On 1 Apr 10 deploy 4 x Coy (Pontdrift, Beitbridge, Macadamia, Ndumo (4 x RM25) • Utilise RM8 to commence high site & communications infrastructure establishment • Utilise RM5 to commence Base repair/maintenance • UtiliseRM15 to commence 4x4 Vehicle acquisition • Utilise RM7 for NABOB fence repair • SA Army to prepare 3rd Bn for possible Apr 2011rollout • Do not initiate further rollout until additional funding can be provided RESTRICTED
