Homes of the Northwest Native Americans • Indians of the Northwest coastal region lived in cedar plank houses. These were made from the giant cedar, or sequoia trees that grew in this region. A totem pole stood outside the home and told the story of the people who lived inside. Homes were decorated with berry dye. Raven was a popular character and was used for many designs.
Food • Salmon, trout, and whales were important foods for the Northwest Native Americans. A single whale could feed a whole village! Whole villages would camp by the river when the salmon were spawning upstream. Some say the salmon were so plentiful you could walk across their backs without getting your feet wet! These Indians also gathered berries and farmed the three sisters.
Clothing • The Native Americans who lived along the Northwest coast wore cedar bark clothing. Cedar was waterproof and peeled easily from the giant cedar trees. They also wove blankets with cedar and goat hair called chilkat blankets.
