  2. Introducing Sandra Dyke • My role is to support international commerce and IT students with their studies • This means I have time available to work with groups of students

  3. Who Am I?

  4. Completed Qualifications • Professional Accountancy Exams (ACA – equivalent to an accounting major) • Diploma in Teaching (secondary teaching) • Bachelor of Business (management major) • Diploma in ICT Level 6 (Distinction) • Bachelor of Information Technology

  5. Partially Completed Qualifications • Bachelor of Information Science (Decision Science – applied maths) about 75% complete • Bachelor of Information Science (Honours in Information Science) 1year equivalent course 50% complete

  6. Professional Memberships • Member New Zealand Institute of Accountants – Chartered Accountant

  7. Work Experience • Inland Revenue Department (6 years) as an Investigating Officer, Tax Auditor and Customer Services • Audit New Zealand (3 years) as an assistant auditor of local and central government • Secondary teacher (10 year) mainly maths with some computing, careers and life skills

  8. NMIT (5 years) • Lab assistant for computers in the library • Course support for Chinese students in IT • General study support with the library learning centre • One on one work with students with specific needs • Teaching • pre degree maths course • IT courses (Database Year 1, Systems Development Year 1) • Commerce courses (Computerised Accounting Year 1, Accounting Information Systems Year 2)

My Coaching Style • Helping students how to learn by • working through a problem solving process • aim of finding the required information • learning problem solving techniques • so students are able to attempt to solve their own problems in the future • Learning different strategies to assist in assignment and exam situations • Offering practical advice on revision and exam techniques

Tutorial Groups • The following courses: • LAW 510 – Commercial Law • MGT636 – Principles of Applied Management • MGT734 – Strategic Management • MGT736 – Advanced Applied Management • INF755 – Project Management • SDV200 – Software Development • INT300 - Web Application Development • I will also work with groups of students in other courses if you or your tutor approaches me.

What I can help with: • Understanding readings/textbook • Understanding the vocabulary • Putting the information into context • Understanding assignment requirements • Study and time management skills (eg referencing) • Individual assistance with course work where extra help and support is needed • Help students organise working with other students in a peer support environment • Exam preparation

  14. What I won’t do: • Proofreading • Individual help with research • Anything else where support is already available (eg through the library) • However I am prepared to make exceptions if the need is there

  15. What you can expect from me: • Someone who will help you how to study • Someone who will help you find answers to your study questions • Someone who is willing to understand, or is understanding of your study needs • Someone who will encourage you in your studies and who wants you to succeed

  16. What I expect of you: • Attendance at timetabled tutorials • Prepare for tutorials by attempting questions/readings set even if you are unsure of the answers • Have a copy of the required textbook • Ask questions when you are unsure

  17. How is this going to work? • Students to complete a small questionnaire of their courses and initial study needs • Timetabled tutorial times • Some drop times • NMIT Online course for resources, timetables and forums • Feedback from students on what works and what doesn’t

What happens next: • Students locate the tutorial groups they have been assigned to • If you are not on a list you will be added to one • Students add themselves to the NMIT Online page for Business and IT International students • (Password: International 2010) • Students change their preferred email address in NMIT Online to an email address they regularly use • Students complete the short questionnaire
