  1. Plants

  2. Living Things • All living things grow and change. • All living things need food, water, and air to live.

  3. Nonliving Things • Nonliving things are not alive. • Nonliving things do not need food, water, or air.

  4. Plants must have these things to grow. • Sunlight • Air • Water • Nutrients or minerals from the soil

  5. When a seed has sunlight, air, water, and nutrients it will begin to germinate, or start to grow. This young plant that grows from a seed is called a seedling.

  6. The first part of the plant you see growing above the ground as it develops from a seed, or a seed, or any new growth on an already existing plant is called a shoot. Strong shoot!

  7. Parts of a Plant • Roots hold the plant in the soil and takes in water and nutrients from the soil.

  8. Parts of a Plant • The stem holds up the plant and moves water and nutrients through it.

  9. Parts of a Plant • Leaves use light, air, water, and nutrients to make food for the plant.

  10. Parts of a Plant • Flowers make fruits that hold seeds. Flower 

  11. Parts of a flowering plant (With a new shoot) Functions • Flower: to make seeds • Roots: holds plant to the ground and takes in water and minerals from the soil. • Stem: holds up plant leaves and flowers and transports water and minerals around the plant. • Leaf: collects sunlight for photosynthesis (to make food for the plant) Leaf Stem

  12. Seed Coat Seed Leaf Stored Food Developing Plant Parts of a Seed

  13. Seed Coat The hard covering that protects the seed is the ... The part that looks like a leaf inside each seed is the ... Seed Leaf

  14. Seeds • Seeds are formed in the center part of the flower or fruit. • Seeds come in many shapes and sizes. • Plants grow from seeds.

  15. Planting Animals Water Wind How Seeds Are Scattered

  16. The life of a plant begins as a seed. Once you plant and water a seed it begins to germinate. The root pushes through the seed coat. The seedling grows out of the ground. The stem and its leaves point to the sunlight. The leaves make its own food. Flowers begin to bloom and make seeds. New seeds are formed and scattered. What is this process called? How a Seed Grows into a New Plant

  17. Can you think of different parts of a plant that we eat? 2 minutes to think of some examples . . . . . . Get thinking !!!!

  18. On some plants we eat the… roots! radish beetroot onion potato carrot Look… it’s below the stem and leaves

  19. On some plants we eat the… leaf! spinach lots of herbs lettuce

  20. On some plants we eat the… stem! rhubarb asparagus celery

  21. On some plants we eat the… flower! broccoli tomato cauliflower cucumber

  22. The Life Cycle of a Plant

  23. Life Cycle of a Plant

  24. Remember… When the small plant inside begins to grow, the seed germinates. The young plant that grows from a seed is the seedling. Seeds are scattered by planting, wind, water, and animals.
