How Do You Earn Credits? • Students are enrolled each semester in a minimum of 6 classes. • Each class is worth 5 credits. • Students should earn 30 credits per semester (60 credits per year). Students need 230 credits to graduate. • To earn credits for high school, a student must pass a class with a grade of “D-” or higher.
Basic Diploma Requirements • English - 4 years (40 credits) • Social Studies -3 years- World History, United States History, Civics, Economics (30 credits) • Math - 3 years (30 credits, must complete Algebra, Geometry and one other year) • Science- 3 years (30 credits, must complete one biological science and one physical science)

Requirements Cont’d. • Physical Education - 2 years (20 credits) • Applied/Fine Arts Arts/Foreign Language – 2 out of 3 areas (20 credits) • Health- 1 semester (5 credits) • Electives - 55 credits • TOTAL: 230 CREDITS + CHSEE • Diploma with Distinction and Advanced Scholar Diploma Options-see handout

CSU/UC Minimum Requirements “a-g” • English -4 years • History/Social Science -2 years • Mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II) -3 years *Colleges expect all students to take math in the senior year. • Foreign Language -2 years *3 years of the same foreign language is preferred.

Continued • Laboratory Science -2 years *One year of Biology and one year of Chemistry is expected. • Visual/Performing Art -1 year • College Prep Elective -1 year • SAT or ACT in Junior and Senior years • “D” grades do not count for 4 year colleges!-See your counselor for more info
UC System: • Serves top 1/8 of high school graduate • MINIMUM GPA of 3.0 to apply Comprehensive Review includes: • a – g courses in grades 10 – 11 • number of a-g courses • number of AP/Honors • quality of the senior year • extra-curricular activities, special talents • SAT or ACT
UC System: Entering Class of 2011 • Average GPA was 3.86 with 24 “a-g” courses • Average cost $32,000/year • Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) at seven UC campuses -GPA varies from campus to campus
New UC Admission Requirements • Students must complete 11 of the 15 “a-g” requirements by the end of 11th grade and achieve at least a 3.0 GPA in those courses. • Plus, the top 9% of the graduating class who meet the above eligibility will be guaranteed admission to at least one UC campus. • SAT II Subject Tests are now optional
CSU System: • Serves top 1/3 of high school graduates • Local CSUEB and SFSU best bets • CSU Eligibilty Index= GPA + SAT or ACT • Minimum 2.0 GPA, 3.0 automatically qualifies for non-impacted campuses • Requires SAT or ACT w/o writing • Average cost $19-24,000/year living on-campus
CA Private Colleges: • 75 Independents in California alone • 9 out of 10 receive financial assistance • More students graduate in 4 years • Every admission file is personally reviewed • Classes are smaller with actual professors • Personal attention to succeed in college/life • Average cost of $38,000 more expensive, but average financial aid package is $19,900/year
CA Community Colleges: • All students should take “a-g” requirements, especially MATH if they wish to be in a Transfer Program • DUSD Concurrent Enrollment Program for 10-12 graders-earn HS and College credit • Transfer Programs/AA & AS/Certificates • Average cost $1000/year • No SAT or ACT testing required
Freshman “Musts” This Year • Create a 4-year plan in Spring with your counselor • Take a career assessment/interest inventory • Participate in clubs, sports and other extra-curricular activities • Go to a College Fair or visit a college • Visit the Career Center • Apply for Academic Block D and CSF in February
Sophomore “Musts” This Year • Take the PSAT on the third Saturday of October if in Geometry or higher • Take the ACT PLAN Saturday, February 4 • Complete and/or update your 4-year plan • Apply for CSF and Academic Block D in February • Visit the Career Center • Participate in sports, clubs, activities
