Scope • General Tasking from Federal KM Roadmap Initiative Vision doc: “Knowledge Retention Action Group: “Knowledge Retention programs comprise a subset of the practices toolset. Knowledge retention is the collection of practices and tools aimed at offsetting the “brain drain” caused by the retirement of the Baby Boom generation. The Action Group can provide useful support in gathering lessons learned and recommending methodologies for collection and dissemination of such practices as would be useful for Federal Knowledge Managers, and which may have worked in the past.“ • Needs for Knowledge Retention concern knowledge loss due to: • Retirement • Job change • Absence from job (temporary or prolonged) • Other..?? • Draft outline of our report: • Overview of KR (including scope, over-all problem, and critical importance of KR) • Sample Issues (include potential solutions, best practices, and benefits to be derived) • Determining requirements for KR • Potential partners • Recommended next steps
Brainstorming… • How do we articulate the over-all problems? (Where can we get credible data to support our assertions?) • What knowledge loss issues result from those problems? Typical interventions? • Where do KR requirements come from? • How do requirements drive solutions? • What KR methodologies and tools look appealing? Under which circumstances?
