3. Guided Reading • Strategic reading approach that encompasses a variety of skills • Reading levels are developmental and determined by county established benchmark levels (A…M)

4. Guided Reading • Reading group books will be brought home nightly to practice fluency • Students learn at a different pace; therefore, we continually assess students for flexible grouping.

9. Research has shown that children do not transfer performance on “traditional spelling tests” to everyday writing. Children learn best by active involvement and practice with the task at hand. Words Their Way allows them to see word and letter patterns for themselves.

10. The Basis for Word Study Word study is developmental Word study follows the continuum of word knowledge. Most students follow the same continuum, but possibly at different rates.

Homework at a Glance Spelling: Monday - Thursday Math: Monday - Thursday Reading Calendar: Find the time to read for 20 days, reading group books will be sent home Monday - Thursday • Homework should be returned daily in the gold communication folder. • Students will receive a written note home if homework is missing or incomplete. • Reading Calendar is returned to school at the end of each month.

22. What is Co-Teaching? An approach to program delivery where two or more professionals within the same environment share the responsibilities of planning, instructing, and evaluating. (Ex. GT, Special Educators, Paraprofessionals, Reading/Math Support Teachers, ESOL, Speech Pathologist, etc.)

Helping at home… • Establish a homework routine • Be consistent with time and place • Reinforce student responsibility • Gold homework folder in backpack every night and Friday folders returned • Homework should be completed in spelling journal or on math worksheet • Communicate with the teacher if there is a concern or if support is needed

FYI… • Please label coats, sweaters, lunch boxes, etc… • Please send lunch money in a ziploc baggie labeled with name • Please report to the office upon entry into the school for any reason. • We do not have snack this year. Please make sure your child eats a substantial breakfast! • We are looking forward to 2 curriculum-related field trips. Chaperones will be selected via a lottery system. For safety purposes, only chaperones are able to join us. • Please do not send any birthday invitations to be distributed at school. Birthdays may be celebrated with non-edible items (stickers, class book, pencils, etc) for each classmate. • Remember your child’s supplies may need to be replenished as the year progresses (especially glue sticks). • Please see your child’s teacher for classroom wish list items.
