  3. All About Mr. Augst • I am 54 years old, married for half of my life and I have two wonderful daughters. My 30th anniversary is this month on the 27th of August. • My wife is a Nurse working in Gainesville as the nurse manager of a new ear, nose and throat surgical center. • My oldest daughter, Tiffany a graduate of Georgia Gwinnett College with a major in biochemistry . She plans to attend Medical School next fall. • My youngest daughter, Taylor just graduated with a degree in commercial photography from North Georgia Technical College in Clarksville, Georgia. She is starting her own business as a photographer. You can see her work at bellavistaphotography.org

  4. All about Mrs. Johnson • I have been teaching for 23 years. I have taught 2,3,4,and 5 grade. Before we moved to Georgia in 1997, I taught in Florida and Texas. I have a Masters in Early Education and I am ESOL and Gifted Certified. • I have been married for 26 years. • My husband, Lenny works for an IT company called INFRASCIENCE. • I have two sons. Derrick just graduated from the University of West Georgia in April and works fulltime for Greenway Medical. Bradley is getting ready to start his sophomore year at the University of West Georgia.

School Work • Assignments • Most will be finished during class but if not they will have work completion for homework. • Homework • Roughly 60 minutes • 30 min of reading and journaling • Practice math facts and work on practice problems from the days lesson • Review vocabulary and spelling • Review notes to prepare for a test • Work on at home projects

  8. Testing • Fifth graders participate in the following tests this year: • September 16 - 20: CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) • October 21 - 25: ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills) • March 5: Fifth Grade Writing Test • April 23 - 29: CRCT (Criterion Referenced Competency Tests) • Please be sure your child is present on testing days. • Attendance is important every day so the student can hear and see the activities that go along with the lesson.

  9. Snack and Lunch • Students should bring a healthy snack to school each day. Suggestions include fruit, vegetables, crackers, pretzels, and yogurt. Water is the only beverage allowed in our classroom. Students are encouraged to keep a closable water bottle at school. Please do not allow your student to bring chips or snacks that have any kind of powder coating that will stain our books. Ex: Cheetos, Doritos, Hot Fries, Takis, etc. • Parents are welcome to visit our classroom and/or join their children for lunch. Please check visit days and times with us in advance to avoid schedule conflicts. We will typically eat lunch at 10:45 each day. The school respectfully requests that fast food items and canned drinks not be brought to the cafeteria.

Conduct • As members of the Rock Springs community, we’ll be asked to display level 4 behaviors which include: • Respect ourselves • Respect others • Respect school property • Respect learning • During our weekly class meetings, we will explore specific behaviors that do and do not show respect. Students who show respect will earn special privileges to be determined by our class. Students who choose not to show respect will earn consequences.

Conduct Grades • Instances of misbehavior will be noted on the communication card, and weekly conduct grades will be assigned as follows: • 0 checks in the Conduct box: E (Excellent) • 1 or 2 checks: S (Satisfactory) • 3 checks: N (Needs Improvement) • More than 3 checks, or aggressive or unethical behavior: U (Unsatisfactory) Quarterly conduct grades will be determined by averaging the weekly conduct grades.

  13. Writing Workshop Model • Writer’s notebook • Creative writing • Genre writing • Practice prompts – test preparation • Daily Grammar Practice (DGP) • Spelling (Words Their Way – sorting) • Vocabulary Word Study (roots: prefixes, bases, suffixes)

  14. Cursive • The county is requiring students to practice writing in cursive. • I will require that some assignments be written in cursive. • Students will write their DGP assignments on Thursday in cursive. If they struggle in cursive this would be a great practice assignment for Monday through Wednesday.

Science • Earth Science • -Surface features of the earth are caused by constructive and destructive processes • Physical Science • Physical changes and chemical changes • Electricity and magnetism and their relationship to one another • Life Science • Classification of living things • Identify the cell as the building block of living organisms • Compare and contrast learned behaviors and inherited traits • Analyze how microorganisms benefit or harm other organisms • Textbook is on-line

  18. Effort • Students are expected to actively participate in classroom activities, bring required materials to class, and complete homework and classwork in a timely manner. Failure to fulfill these responsibilities will result in a note on the student’s communication card. Effort grades for each subject area will be provided on the student’s report card.

  19.
