Our Goals • To give students the academic and social skills they need to progress to the seventh grade. • To provide a supportive and challenging classroom environment. • To encourage students to take a leadership role in their education.
Class Subjects • Français – Madame Brett • Math / Science – Mr Kiss/ Ms Howlett • Library – Ms Borden • Gym – Mr Pye • Music – Ms Reid • Band – Mr Daw
Intensive Core French (ICF) • Concentrated French Focus for half of the year • English begins at that time (less French) • Science and Math all year – in English
Intensive Core French (ICF) • Outcomes focus on 3 areas: • Communication • Culture • General Language Education • Focus is NOT on teaching core subjects in French –Although there are some cross-curricular elements
ICF -Communication • developing spontaneity/comfort in Oral French (later in written as well) • showing comprehension in various forms – oral and written • responding personally to texts • ability to complete information tasks with support from resources
ICF -Culture • Looking at topics such as… • Importance of bilingualism • French Canadian Culture • Important French Canadians • Francophones in the world • Common French idioms
ICF –General Language Education • Ability to use French-English dictionary • The many different sounds and symbols of the French Language • Following the French Language • Correcting language errors in Oral and Written
Reading • Independent Silent Reading –Students should always have an English novel. • We will also be reading short French Readers. • Students are welcome to check out French books from the school library if they are interested in doing so
Recitations • At least one play is memorized in French per term • Improves vocabulary, allows for understanding and increases comprehension and fluency, and develops skills in presenting. This makes learning the new vocab meaningful and fun! (Instead of learning words in isolation) • Other activities will include a “Fashion Show” in French • Later in the year, English pieces will also be presented –Short speeches, poems etc • Goal is to create a positive environment for presenting and to improve presentation skills
Writing • In French –starting fresh –learning vocab, structures etc • We will start some simple journal writing and descriptions • Once we start English Language Arts halfway through the year we will be doing essay writing etc.
Social Studies • Looking at Canadian Culture • Exploring French-Canadian Culture to develop an appreciation of learning in French • Multiculturalism and appreciating divers cultures
Assessment • On Going and Often! • Observations and conferences for oral activities • Written work samples • ArtWork • Participation is a huge factor!!! Should be encouraged! • Grading for activities is based on the same scale as the report card. • 5’s = Strong / 4’s = Very Good / 3’s = satisfactory
Homework/Les Devoirs • Homework should take no more than 40 minutes every night. • Reading independently daily is encouraged. • Students should be able to complete homework independently. • Projects and recitations could require some extra time and effort but are the most memorable parts of the year.
Homework/Les Devoirs • Activities include • Weekly TV/Radio listening –Noting French Vocab • Baggy book –able to read and understand • Reading own novel nightly –will complete mini-activities to show how they have been reading • Recommended… • Visiting useful Youtube Videos and French games through my website / visiting other French sources that are of interest (i.e. reading some French books, listening to the radio, watching tv, movies in French -even ones that they’ve already viewed in English!).
Les Billets/ “Bon Travail” • Classroom reward/Tickets • Encourage speaking and participation in French • Given for activities such as: • students asking question in French without needing prompting • Answering questions with a French answer • Singing French songs/participation • Being “the teacher” and leading French activity • Prize Draw –every Friday • also used for special privileges in the classroom
Penpals • We have been lucky to find Penpals in Québec and also in Ontario! • It should be great to communicate with others in French and English as well learn about where they live. • It will be very exciting
Communication • Agenda • Please look over student’s work and sign the agenda every night. We write a little bit in French, however the students should understand what it means. • Email /Call • Please let me know of any issues and we can solve them together. • Please email me – if you haven’t – so that I have your email address. I email reminders etc to keep you informed. • Website • Go to ICF HOMEWORK/Blog to see what’s current (on left hand side of my site) • Visit it for useful links
Before you leave… • Please take a look at our drawings –See if you can find your child! (names are not on the front so you can guess!) • Leave your child a note so they can read it in the morning. • Please let me know if you need a paper copy of the curriculum night material
