A 1/5 of all the world's plants and birds and about 1/10 of all mammal species are found in the Amazon rainforest.
More than two thirds of the world's plant species are found in the tropical rainforests: plants that provide shelter and food for rainforest animals as well as taking part in the gas exchanges which provide much of the world's oxygen supply.
The Amazon is the world's largest tropical rainforest. The forest covers the basin of the Amazon, the world's second longest river.
