Jean Martin Charcot Digre, Corbett
The French neurologist, Jean Martin Charcot, (1825-1893), organized the clinical service at the Salpêtrière. He reorganized not only clinical neurology and pathology there, but also introduced ophthalmoscopy and established an ophthalmology department (1862). He reported in his lectures on the nervous system: "[It is important] for us, physicians to familiarise ourselves as much as possible with the regular examination of the fundus of the eye" Charcot (1877-1889).
