AV 6-6 Apply the knowledge of prefixes, suffixes, and roots and their various inflections to analyze the meanings of words. • We are learning to use prefixes, suffixes, roots to understand the meaning of a word.We are looking for how the beginning, ending, base or root of a word (prefix)(suffix)(root) can help us know what a word means.
SUFFIXES are those word parts that COME AT THE END of the WORD. Sometimes a suffix will tell you what part of speech a word is. ie, many adverbs end in –ly. Study suffixes carefully! Suffixes Guidelines: • A suffix is a letter, or group of letters, that is added to the end of a root (base) word. The most common suffixes are -s, -ed, -ing, -ly, and -tion. Let’s see…
#1. -s, -es 31% Used to make plural nouns. school- schools baby- babies fraction- fractions flute- flutes
#2. -ed 20% used to make past-tense verbs Today, I listen to my iPod. Yesterday, I listened to my iPod. I bake a cake. I baked a cake. She wraps the gift. She wrapped the gift.
#3. -ing 14% verb form/present participle They run. They are running. They were running. They have been running. They willhave been running. He slides. He is sliding. He was sliding. He has been sliding.
