  1. prefix- An affix attached before a base word or root, as in re- in reprint. • suffix- An affix attached to the end of a base, root, or stem that changes the meaning or grammatical function of a word, as –en added to form oxen. AV 6-6 Apply the knowledge of prefixes, suffixes, and roots and their various inflections to analyze the meanings of words. • We are learning to use prefixes, suffixes, roots to understand the meaning of a word.We are looking for how the beginning, ending, base or root of a word (prefix)(suffix)(root) can help us know what a word means.

  3. SUFFIXES are those word parts that COME AT THE END of the WORD. Sometimes a suffix will tell you what part of speech a word is. ie, many adverbs end in –ly. Study suffixes carefully! AV 6-6 Apply the knowledge of prefixes, suffixes, and roots and their various inflections to analyze the meanings of words. • -able, -ible [able, can do] edible, agreeable, visible • -age [act of, collection of] salvage, storage, forage • -al [relating to] industrial, manual, natural, gradual • -ant [performing, agent] assistant, servant

  8. Suffixes Guidelines: • A suffix is a letter, or group of letters, that is added to the end of a root (base) word. The most common suffixes are -s, -ed, -ing, -ly, and -tion. Let’s see…

  10. #2. -ed 20% used to make past-tense verbs Today, I listen to my iPod. Yesterday, I listened to my iPod. I bake a cake. I baked a cake. She wraps the gift. She wrapped the gift.
