  2. What is Nationalism? • Nationalism is feelings of pride and loyalty to a nation.

  4. Background… • Following the War of 1812 we enter the period of history known as the Era of Good Feelings. • 1815-1825 • Time of peace, pride and progress

Why did the Era of Good Feelings occur? • Won an international war – War of 1812 • Settled, in our favor, many border and land use disputes. • Examples: • Rush-Bagot Agreement • Adams – Onis Agreement • Convention 1818 • Monroe Doctrine • Increased Manufacturing • Increased power and control of the federal government

  6. Who is Henry Clay? • Member of both the House of Representatives and the Senate from Kentucky • Gifted speaker • Speaker of the House – longest serving • Great Compromiser

  7. What was the American System? A series of measures passed in 1816 intended to make the United States economically self-sufficient and reduce regional conflicts. • Create a National Bank • Tariff on all imported goods • Internal improvements like roads and canals How do these 3 things make the United States economically self sufficient???

American Economic Independence Improved Manufacturing Improved Trade National bank would provide a single currency and improve interstate trade Interstate trade is improved with the improved transportation system allowing goods to get to and from different areas of the country • Tariff on all foreign goods allows American manufacturing to take hold at competitive prices

  9. The Supreme Courts Position on the American System McCulloch v. Maryland Gibbons v. Ogden 1824 States could not interfere with the power of Congress to regulate interstate commerce • 1819 • Stated that Congress had implied powers to pass and create a National Bank

  10. What internal improvements were made with the American System? • Cumberland Road – first road built by the federal government from Cumberland, Maryland to Wheeling, West Virginia (today) • Erie Canal – allowed goods to travel from Albany, New York to Buffalo.
