SHOW me the $$$$$ Presented by Martha Ayala, Hacienda La Puente Unified School District Angelena Pride, Mt. San Antonio College www.mtsacregionaladulted.org
Workshop Objectives • Helping students understand the need for measurable data collection • Eliminating students fear regarding providing information • Best practices for collecting information
“You prove your worth with your outcomes, not with your mouth.” -A. Pride As covered in “Show Your Worth,” it is important for faculty members to track outcomes to show accomplishments in the classroom, but keep in mind that most outcomes materialize once the student has left your program. Understanding that continued funding and support for our programs is based on the performance outcomes of our students, how do we get them to provide us with this information once they have moved on from our classrooms?
Educating our Students • Getting students to understand the importance of reporting their successes (employment, internships, promotions, license, continued education, etc.) to us starts at orientation. • Educate them on WHY we need the information. If we help them understand how that information ties into our programs’ continued funding they may be more open to providing it. • Personalize it. Remind them that they may have a family member or friend who could benefit from the program and we want it to still be around.
Eliminate the Fear! • Introduce students to all staff members who may be contacting them to conduct follow-up. There is nothing worse than a stranger calling and asking personal questions. • Have the individuals doing the follow-up establish a strong rapport with the students they will be following up with. Have them visit the classrooms just to say hello and remind student about how to report successes. • Remind students that, in general, we do not share our information with anyone other than the Chancellor’s Office and COE and this should help put them at ease. • Reassure students that we will not contact their employers. We want them to provide us with the information that we need, we don’t want to call or visit their place of employment
Collecting Data from Undocumented Students • Encourage undocumented students to obtain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) • This number allows them to pay taxes on income earned (federal only) • The information is tracked so that there is a record of earnings (should they later apply for citizenship) For additional information please visit https://www.irs.gov/individuals/general-itin-information
What Qualifies As Success • Employment • Continuing Education • Licensing • Externships • Apprenticeship • Military service • On-the-job-training • Unavailable to work (illness, personal)
Techniques for Obtaining the Information • Inform students of the information we need: • Name and address of the employer • Start date • Position/Job title • Salary range
Techniques for Students Reporting Information • Inform students on how the information can be reported: • Call you with the information • Email you the information • Drop by the office to report the information • Complete the employment form from your site and mail in the information • Complete an online survey • Communicate with you via social media • You may call or email them to obtain the information
Incentives for Reporting • For Students • Raffles • Vouchers • Gift Cards • District SWAG • For Staff • Raffles • Gift Cards • District SWAG
BEST PRACTICES • What has worked best for you when trying to collect data? • What have been the biggest obstacles and how have you overcome them? • What support do you need in order to be more successful in collecting data?
