Bethany Hamilton By : Abby Eppinette
Bioghray • Born into a family of surfers on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, Bethany began surfing at a young age. At the age of eight, Bethany entered her first state-wide surf competition, winning both the short and long board divisions and sparking in herself a love for surf competition. She went on to take runner up at the 2003 US National Championships. On October 31, 2003, at the age of 13, Bethany was attacked by a 15-foot tiger shark while surfing off Kauai's North Shore. The attack took Bethany's left arm, seemingly ending her career as a rising surf star just as it was beginning.
Her Story • It came, literally, out of the blue.I had no warning at all; not even the slightest hint of danger on the horizon. The waves were small and inconsistent, and I was just kind of rolling along with them, relaxing on my board with my left arm dangling in the cool water. I remember thinking, "I hope the surf picks up soon..."That's all it took: a split second. I felt a lot of pressure and a couple of lightning fast tugs. Then I watched in shock as the water around me turned bright red. Somehow, I stayed calm. My left arm was gone almost to the armpit, along with a huge crescent-shaped chunk of my red, white and blue surfboard.
Why is she a good citizen • Bethany Hamilton is a good citizen because after she got her arm bitten off she didn`t stop living her dream . She kept trying and trying . Because of that she has inspired millions of kids to realize that they can do anything no matter who they are. • She has also written a book about what happened to her. You can learn from the book that you can do anything . Millions of kids looks up to her for all that she has done.
How this will affect the future? • People aren`t just going to remember her as just the girl that got her arm bitten off. They’re going to remember her as an inspiration, someone to look up to . Look at her now, she`s surfing with one arm. She didn`t give up when it was hard for her. In the future, kids will realize that things might be hard for them but they shouldn’t give up.
