What laws and attitudes existed that allowed the events to occur? • The Canadian people thought that because there were so many Indians that they would take over work. • The attitude towards the Indians was hatred. • British Columbia made a law that discouraging the immigration of Indians to Canada. Indians had to have at least $200 on their person to enter British Columbia (at an average par rate of  $.10 per day.) • The Federal government, in 1908, passed into Law the Continuous Passage Act which stated that Indians would have to come to Canada via direct passage from India.  Considering the distance from India to Canada by boat and the average income in India, these rules and laws were blatant discrimination.

Describe the events that occurred? • In 1914 a person named Gurdit Singh, living in Hong Kong, decided to challenge the law by sending a shipload of Indians to Canada as immigrants. • On March 24, 1914, the governor of Hong Kong, who had known Gurdit Singh in Malaysia, released him from custody and granted him leave to sail to Canada on April 4. • The Komagata Maru arrived in Vancouver on May 23, 1914 with 376 passengers on board.

  4. What was the reaction to the event? • Crowds lined the waterfront when the Komagata Maru arrived and they returned to gaze at the ship and its passengers whenever the promise of drama or action heightened. However, this curiosity and sense of excitement, did not awaken much sympathy among Vancouverites for the ordeal of the passengers or their desire to come to Canada.

  5. When and how did the laws change? • Today Indians are just as free as Canadians and any other person living in Canada. • The laws now are more reasonable in Canada then they were in 1914. • Indians are can vote and live and work and they don’t have tot have $200.00 on their person.

Have there been any apologies or inquiries about the events? • British Columbia apologies for the Komagata maru incident. • An apology from Prime Minister Stephen Harper for the 1914 Komagata Maru incident in which hundreds of Indians seeking a better life in Canada were turned away has failed to win over Sikh community members.
