Common Core Mathematics Standards Frederick County Public Schools
Common Core Mathematics There are Common Core mathematics standards starting in Pre-Kindergarten and going all the way to Algebra 2. Common Core mathematics standards will help to prepare students for both college and careers after high school.
What’s the same and what’s different? • SAME – • The Common Core standards teach the same mathematics content that we currently teach. • DIFFERENT – • Some mathematics topics will be taught in earlier grades. For instance, dividing fractions by fractions will be taught in 6th grade instead of 7th grade. Also, much of the content in our current Algebra 1 course will be taught prior to the Common Core Algebra 1 course. • Also some new standards will emphasize student understanding over procedural knowledge; but (again) this is NOT new math content.
Common Core Basics Peter Cincotta, the FCPS Curriculum Specialist for Secondary Mathematics, goes over the basics of Common Core and how it will better prepare students for life after high school. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5ihowlLr7c

Accelerated Math • HS credit will be given for just the 8th grade Accelerated Class • Geometry no longer in Middle School • Increased rigor of the CCSS • Since FCPS is still responsible for H.S.A., content must be taught • Focused work within each grade • Content is not repeated across grade levels like in years pass • Skipping grades in Mathematics is not a viable option • Highly Abled students need to be enriched, not reduced curriculum. • Skipping grade level mathematics creates knowledge gaps, opposite of what is desired.
