NSHS Math Night November 6 & 12, 2013
Agenda • Meeting Purpose • Math Curriculum changes- Common Core State Standards (CCSS) • Expectations for NSHS students • Instructional practices • Supports available • Quarter 1 group data • Parent/student resources
Meeting Purpose • Establish a partnership between schools and families to assist students in math
Curriculum Changes- CCSS • Adopted by 45 of 50 states, including RI • Standards provide more clarity and focus, but learning is accelerated from past years • Less review time at beginning of year • Ex. Algebra 1 topics that used to be covered in algebra 2 • 5 or 6 units of study- quizzes, tests, unit assessments for each • Focus- explicitly teaching the standards
Student Expectations • Nightly homework, will receive credit for effort, not accuracy • Come prepared to class with questions on difficult problems • Problem sets given few times/quarter, collected and graded for accuracy • Problem sets- take home or in class in groups with teacher assistance • Teachers available if need extra help (before tests, problem sets)
Instructional Practices • Teaching to mastery, not exposure • Re-teaching concepts, tests revisions/re-takes in some cases • Cooperative learning, peer assistance • Study guides for all assessments • More group work
Supports • Co-teaching support (algebra and geometry) • Extra class (algebra/geometry support) for qualifying students • Algebra readiness class for recommended students • Integrated algebra for recommended algebra 2 students • After school help, advisory help • Students encouraged to form peer study groups
