CHALLENGE • Respond to Scottish academic research – SHEFC/SFC Report • Loss of UK corporate laboratories - Lack of critical mass adequate infrastructure, worldclass leadership VISION • Create the Edinburgh Research Partnership as a Joint Venture • World-class JRIs in Engineering and Mathematics • Post launch - be inclusive – link to other (SRP) researchers across Scotland

PROJECTS • Funding for 10 Endowed Chairs and 10 Lectureships over 5 JRIs • Funding for Selected Research Equipment Infrastructure • Funding for 2 administrators & 2 IT professionals • Infrastructure enhancement • - postgraduate student centre (HWU (£6M)) • - enhanced communication infrastructure for Seminars/Teaching • - 15 PhD prize studentships • Funding for Technology Outreach Centres - KT Hubs ERP – Original Investments

An ambitious but sustainable plan Features of ERP • Large scale vision ~200 academics ~800 total researchers • JRIs to deliver world class research with selectivity based on robust objective performance criteria - over five core disciplines • Combine world class academic research with effective knowledge transfer strategies - including for spin off companies • A major contributor to Scotland’s knowledge based economy • Build appropriate links between JRIs - and with other Scottish Universities • ERP management light touch and focussed at JRI level • Aim for integration and scale-up of MSc level courses

Materials & Processes in SEE@UoE can collaborate with NRP and the GRP • Such collaborations will be used to grow bigger international partnerships
