  2. Road to Statehood Washington Territory separates from Oregon Territory in 1853 Statehood would require: A Population of 60,000+, A Territorial constitution, And a Public school system

Constitutional Convention • 1878 • Women’s suffrage was the biggest issue • Congress failed to approve proposed constitution and make Washington a state • 1889 – Enabling Act • Washington, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana enter the Union • Washington became 42nd state on November 11, 1889 • Elisha P. Ferry – first state governor
