  5. AGRICULTURE • Families owned and operated lands • 1889 Walter Granger came to Yakima Valley to begin irrigation project • 1893 Sunnyside Canal opened

  6. LOGGING • Thousands of acres in Western Wa. • People used crosscut saws to cut trees. • Timber was transporter to mills.

  7. FISHING • Important industry • Major source of food for Natives. • First cannier build on Columbia River at Eagle Cliffs • 1881 there were 30 canneries in Wa. • Whaling and the Makah Indians

  8. IMMIGRANTS IN WA • Hawaiians - called Kanakas • Irish - potato famine in Ireland, 1840’s. Agriculture, railroad, mining. • Chinese laborers, merchants, businessmen
