Wavelength • Wavelength is the distance between one point on a wave and the nearest point just like it. • The measure of the distance between two successive identical parts of a wave (crest to crest in for transverse, compression to compression for compressional/longitudinal) • www.acoustics.salford.ac.uk/schools/lesson1/flash/wavelength.swf

  9. Amplitude • Amplitude is a measure of the distance between a line through the middle of wave and a crest or trough. (half the height) • Amplitude is the greatest distance that vibrations in a wave move from their normal position when a wave passes by. Greater amplitude = greater energy

  10. What kind of wave is shown? • How many wavelengths are shown? • Which wave has less energy, A or B? • Which wave has greater frequency, A or B? transverse 2 B Neither: same frequency (# WL/time)

Speed • Speed is the distance a wave travels per time • Wave speed is determined by • Type of wave • Nature of medium • Waves travel at different speeds through different mediums. • As a wave enters a different medium, the wave’s speed changes. • All electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed in empty space: • 300 million m/s!
