Learn about wave properties like amplitude, wavelength, frequency, and wave speed. Discover how these factors impact energy and wave behavior in different mediums. Explore the formula for calculating wave speed and the variation in wave characteristics across different types of waves.

Amplitude • Amplitude- Distance of a wave above and below the normal level • Amplitude of a transverse wave is about ½ the distance between the crest and trough • Related to the energy the wave carries • EX: Tsunami has large amounts of energy with a lot of amplitude
Wavelength • Wavelength- (Transverse) Distance from the top of one crest to the top of the next or from trough to trough • Wavelength- (Compression) Distance from center of one compression and center of the next compression or from rarefaction to rarefaction
Frequency • Frequency- Number of wave lengths that pass a given point in 1 second (Hz or Hertz) • As frequency increases, wavelength decreases
Wave Speed • Formula for wave speed… • Wave speed (m/s)=frequency (Hz) X wavelength (m) • Mechanical waves travel fastest in solids and slowest in gases • Electromagnetic waves travel fastest in gases and slowest in solids Mechanical Wave
