  1. Apprenticeships at Halesowen College

  2. What is an apprenticeship? • An apprentice is someone employed by a company in a specific role. This may mean that you go to college on day release or undertake all of your training at work. • Apprentices earn a salary, gain real work experience and achieve qualifications that are nationally-recognised and important to employers. • There are no associated debts or fees to pay, like at university or college, and as an apprentice you'll be entitled to annual holiday pay and other benefits just like any other employee.

  3. What will I study?

  4. Different levels of apprenticeships:

  5. Different types of apprenticeships: • Business Admin • Customer Service • Accounting • IT, Software, Web and Telecoms Professionals • Laboratory Technicians

  6. Entry Requirements • L2 minimum entry requirements: grade C or better in English Language plus a minimum of grade D in GCSE Maths. • L3/L4: a minimum of 5 GCSE passes, including English Language and Maths at grade C or better + additional requirements (previous slide)

  7. Administration & Customer Service • L2, L3 and L4 apprenticeships in Administration or L2 and L3 Customer Service: • L2 suitable for school leavers, L2 College leavers and L3 College leavers • L3/L4 suitable for College leavers with 1 or 2 A levels or M/D grades in a BTEC L3 arts based qualification eg Media, Communications)

  8. Accounting • L2 and L3 Accounting: • All apprentices start at L2 unless they already hold A level Accounts or AAT L2. • Must have a minimum of 5 GCSE passes including Maths and English Language at grade C or better.

  9. IT, Software, Web & Telecoms Professionals: • Offered at L3 and L4(includes HNC) • Applicants must have achieved A level IT or Computing or BTEC L3 Extended Diploma in IT • All applicants interviewed by IT for suitability • As a rough guide: applicants with PPP grades guided to L3; those with higher grades – depends on interview and achievement on programming units at L3.

Laboratory Technicians: • Offered at L3 • Includes HNC in Applied Science • Applicants must have a Level 3 qualification in Science: • Those with L3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science in general progress to HNC Applied Biology option. • Those with A level Chemistry + one other A level in general progress to HNC Applied Chemistry option. • All must have GCSE passes in English Language and Maths (C or better)

What do I do if I have suitable candidates for an apprenticeship? • Step 1: candidate makes an appointment to meet Clare Davies in Careers • Step 2: Clare assesses general suitability of candidate and shows them how to access “Apprenticeship Vacancies on Line” website. • Step 3: candidate booked into an interview evening at Coombs wood • Step 4: candidate interviewed by subject specialist, undertakes literacy and numeracy test and advised on job applications.

  12. Key facts: • Apprenticeships can start in any month of the year. • Apprentices attend College- usually one day per week for off the job training. • Apprentices are employees with a contract of employment, usually lasting for the length of the apprenticeship in the first instance. • Apprentices are paid a minimum of £2.68 per hour

  13. Employers: • All employer premises assessed for Health and Safety • Apprenticeships must last for a minimum of a year and a day for apprentices aged 16 – 19. • All College apprenticeships last between a year and 36 months. • For more information, please email Penny Riddle or Emma Ball.

  14. Fast Track Business Administration Programme • Designed for learners wanting an Administration or Customer Service apprenticeship, but who do not have a job by September. • Counts as a full time programme: 2 days per week in College; 2 days on unpaid placement (found by us). • Lasts for 17 weeks. Fast track comprises: • L2 NVQ Certificate in Business & Administration • L2 Certificate in Principles of Business & Administration • L1 Award in Customer Service/Employability Skills • Progression to L3 apprenticeship or L3 full time programme with work experience.

  15. Conclusion • Entry requirements: Grade C in GCSE English Language and at least grade D in GCSE Maths • All applicants are interviewed by members of the Apprenticeship Team. • Any learners interested in the programme should be referred to Clare Davies in Careers in the first instance.
