Early intervention model A new approach to solve the problem is based on four steps: • Early identification of the symptoms of burnout • To bring the matter up with the farmer • To create a rescue plan • To make sure the rescue plan is working for real
Step 1: Early identification • Problems of the identification • Insider? • Outsider? • Alarming signs • Farmers’ mental and physical condition • General appearance of the farm • Animal health
Step 2: To speak about the situation with the farmer • The most difficult phase is how to speak about the situation? • The observer must have the skill and the courage • Key words are “sensitive” and “confidence” • The model provides the tools to handle the situation • Training • Leaflets • Contacts • Etc.
Step 3: Rescue plan • Respect of the wishes of the farmer • External experts oftenneeded • Written rescue plan
Step 4: Follow up • Ensures that the implementation of the rescue plan comes true • Gives also a possibility to precise or change the rescue plan
The conclusions • The model has been created and adopted recently • Mela has been the main developer of the model • Mela is the main actor with the help of Farmers’ Union and other actors in agricultural business • Performance of the model has not been confirmed yet • However the first reactions has been very positive
