About the Colonies • The Colonists came to the New World and settled in the 13 colonies. • The Colonists were ruled by the British. • The Colonists became angry and wanted to be free of British rule. • The Loyalists were people in the colonies that suportedKing George and wanted to remain citizens of England. • The Patriots were people in the colonies that wanted to remove the high taxes that King George forced them to pay.
Road to War • The Colonists had to pay extra taxes for news paper, card games, land deeds , and much more. This was called the Stamp Act. • The British removed all of the taxes except for the tax on tea. So the Colonists dressed up as Indians and dumped the tea in the Boston Harbor. • As their punishment King George closed the Boston Harbor so supplies could not get in or out.
Important People • George Washington was a soldier from Virginia. he was the Patriot’s leader. • Paul Revere was a silversmith he is famous for his midnight ride shouting the British are coming! • John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and George Washington wrote the Declaration of Independence. • Francis Marion was famous for hiding in swamps. • On the Declaration of Independence John Hancock’s signature was the biggest because he didn’t like King George the most. • Emily Geiger was a Patriot that was delivering a message one day but the British caught her. So she memorized the note and then ATE the note! It worked, the British let her go!
Important Facts about the Battles • The Boston Massacre took place before the Revolutionary War. The first man killed in the Boston Massacre was a black man named Crispus Attucks. • The first battle was fought at Lexington and Concord on April 19th, 1774. • The Battle of Kings Mountain is a famous battle in South Carolina fought in 1780. The Patriots hid behind trees while the Loyalists marched in a straight line. Then the Patriots shot and the battle began. It lasted for an hour and the Patriots won. After 8 years of fighting the Patriots won the Revolutionary War and got their freedom.
