MATH • ONLINE RESOURCES: • Arizona Department of Education Standards • HUSD Power Standards • Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley Textbook • Assignments: • Homework—review/finish class work • Study for periodic Quizzes and Tests • Math Facts: 3 minutes – 100 problems (x/÷) • Kids College—customized skill practice • Galileo—HUSD Quarterly Assessments/Dialogues

WRITING • The Writing Process • Five Paragraph Essay • 6 Traits of Writing Ideas Word Choice Voice Organization Conventions Sentence Fluency • Bing, Bang, Bongo/Write From the Beginning • Frequent (3-5x/week) Journal Writing in Spiral NB • Incorporate Grammar and Spelling Units • Presentation—neat, legible handwriting

READING • Arizona/HUSD Standards • Galileo—HUSD Quarterly Assessments and Dialogues • Kids College –customized skill practice • Class Read Aloud Novels/Literature Studies • Student Book Shares (oral) and reports/projects • Houghton Mifflin Reading Text • Incorporate Grammar and Spelling Practice • Spelling City.com

  6. Accelerated Reader • STAR test quarterly– comprehension growth • Meet Quarterly goals set by reading ability • Independent reading/testing—DAILY • Read during spare time/AR reading time • 20-30 minutes every night at home • See Parent information on HUSD website

Science/Social Studies • Standards on Arizona Department of Education and HUSD Website • Galileo—Science Quarterly Assessments • Some group work • Other than periodic projects, homework is finishing/reviewing class work and studying for tests • Textbooks— • Science—McMillan-McGraw Hill • Social Studies—Harcourt Horizons

  8. Class Assignments • “Homework” is primarily unfinished class work. • Those who use class time wisely should not have much homework, but all students should review assignments nightly. • Other home activities include: AR Reading, Kids College, Galileo Dialogues and Spelling City.

Assignments…Continued • Periodic projects/book reports • Information will be communicated by email • Check Student Assignment Folder/Agendas for information. • Check teacher webpage at HUSD website • Plenty of notice will be given!  • Unless otherwise stated, most assignments are due the next morning at 8:10 am.

  10. Grades/Missing Assignments Please check HUSD website for link to Genesis online grade book. Check grades weekly and email questions to me as needed. We try to update at least once a week Students who are missing assignments will miss recess and/or Fun Friday to catch up. They may need time at home as well. Work that is not completed will received a ZERO. Points will be deducted on work that is late.

  14. Nutrition • Breakfast • Lunch: 11:47-12:17 • Pay Online—HUSD webpage • Bring a Healthy personal snack for recess • Please be mindful of peanut /nut allergies

From the Nurse • We are a “drug freeschool” •  No student should bring any medication or drugs to school, including throat lozenges, cough drops, inhalers, or Tylenol.  Parents must sign in all medication at the nurse’s office. • Students with temperature of 100 or more, diarrhea, vomiting, chicken pox, head lice or unknown rash will be sent home. • Band Aid donations are appreciated • There is a dress code at Power Ranch. Please check the HUSD Code of Conduct on HUSD webpage.

  16. Safety • Two Drop-Off Areas: • East Entrance • West Loop • Please do not enter the parking lot in FRONT of school. You will have to turn around during busy times before and after school. Busses only!  • Lock bikes/scooters in assigned areas.

  17. Let’s Have a Great Year! • It is important to address any concerns or problems, but it is also great to hear about what your child is enjoying in class! • Please communicate any positive information and/or concerns. Email is the best and quickest way to communicate.
