  1. Drought Management CentreforSoutheastern EuropeServices and challenges Gregor Gregorič Environmental Agency of Slovenia

  2. Currently, DMCSEE is a TCP-SEE supported project! 15 partnersfrom 9 countries Total project budget 2.2 M€ Not all countries participate! (not all countries are eligible; See www.southeast-europe.net)

  3. Establishing services • Standardized precipitation index • Palfai drought index, WINISAREG model • NWP-based products • Drought monthly bulletin • Risk assessment

  4. SPI – regional reference index SPI maps • Global gridded data sets • Global station data sets - Local calculation/distribution - > close collaboration with NHMSs www.dmcsee.org

  5. Monthly drought bulletin www.dmcsee.org

  6. SPI – beyond global databases… Calculation of SPI based on local data • Historical records (1971-2000) • Homogene QC data • Data availability

  7. Training on climatological practices Budapest, 1st – 5th February 2010 Lessions learned: How to interpolate point data and prepare maps of drought indices which can be exchanged and intercompared – this can potentialy be used for preparation of regional climatological and drought monitoring products

  8. SPI – regional reference index DMCSEE TCP project Mapping of SPI

  9. DMCSEE beyond the TCP project… Secondment of experts from Bosnia and Turkey to DMCSEE headquarters (WMO DRR/SEE project, task #4.3) Mr. Enis Krečinić, Mr. Ayhen Erkan September – December 2010 Focus: Application of GIS in drought monitoring (Reports submitted to WMO)

  10. Establishing services – drought monitoring Interoperability based on GIS web service Standards Example: SPI for DMCSEE included in JRC EDO portal

  11. HAZARD RISK VULNERABILITY Concept of risk risk = hazard x vulnerability Both, natural hazard due to climate variability, and more subjective vulnerability, cause risk of drought impacts - > early warning is more than monitoring natural hazards! (Source: MEDROPLAN)

  12. Concept of risk Impact data Data of crop yield losses – historical data (bulletins, agricultural reports...) - > preparation of regional impact data base

  13. Concept of risk Impact data Data of crop yield losses Example – summer drought 2006 Archive of administration for civil protection and disaster relief

  14. Foreseen outcomes of the TCP project Vulnerability assessment using interaction matrices method

  15. DMCSEE key challenges • Establishment of permanent DMCSEE office • Performing regional services started with TCP project (EW, trainings) • Collaboration with other relevant bodies (JRC -> EDO portal) • Involvment in project calls
