  1. Youth United Jordan Jacobs Wilhemina Brooks Maricella Ramirez

  2. Introduction to Youth United • We represent several different programs in Southwest Detroit. • We’ve been a part of Youth United so we decided to use Youth United as our name. • Youth United is a group where youth can voice their opinions and work on projects.

  3. Why did we choose our issue? • Linked to other issues in the community • High school drop-out rate in Southwest Detroit • Personal experiences (people we know who’ve dropped out and impact on them)

  4. Our Goal • To find out information on why kids choose to drop-out or to remain in school. To also present our finding to teachers and possibly have an effect on them.

  5. The 411 • Who & What: Facilitate focus groups with youth about school. Present findings to teachers and school administrators. • When: Sept. 2005 – May 2006 • Where: Focus groups at DHDC, La Sed, Covenant House, Southwest Solutions, schools. Presentations to teachers at middle schools (during staff mtgs.?) • How: Recruit youth to attend focus groups, analyze data, ask schools to present, follow-up with teachers.

  6. Challenges • Getting everyone together after returning from camp. • Haven’t had full participation from all Team members. • People make commitments but don’t follow though. • Need a plan. • Had to assign new team roles. • No funds to support project.

  7. Successes • Scheduled regular time to meet • Created timeline for project • Finished High/ Scope grant
