Trois dates, trois compositions comme autant d'instantanés d'un domaine essentiel de l'œuvre sacrée de Haendel : l'anthem. • Le onzième des Chandos Anthems, Let God arise « Dieu se lève » futcommandé en 1717 par James Brydges, Duc de Chandos. A son sujet, Daniel Defoe écrivait en 1725 dans son Périple à travers toute l’Ile de Grande-Bretagne : « Aucun noble en Angleterre, et très peu en Europe, mène un train de vie d’une splendeur, d’une magnificence et d’une noblesse égales à celui du Duc de Chandos. »Haendel reprendra le puissant chœur final de cet anthem dans Israël en Egypte. • C'est le Psaume 89 qui fournit le texte du court Coronation anthem, Let thy hand bestrengthened« Forte soit ta main ». Ce puissant motet fait partie du cycle des quatre anthems commandés pour le fastueux couronnement de George II en 1727. • Changement de climat avec le Funeral Anthem for Queen Caroline,The ways of Zion do mourn« Les chemins de Sion sont en deuil ». En hommage à sa protectrice la Reine Caroline, Haendel élabore une ample fresque chorale en dix chœurs. Il choisit des textes puisés notamment dans les vigoureuses et pathétiques Lamentations de Jérémie. Haendel estimait tellement cette œuvre qu’il l’incorporera intégralement dans son oratorio Israël en Egypte. Quant à Mozart, impressionné par le 1er chœur de cet anthem, il s’en inspirera pour écrire l’Introït de son Requiem.
