Liberty. The quality or state of being free. Proclamation- an official, formal public announcement. Boycott – to refuse to purchase certain goods or services. Repeal – to cancel a law. Duty – a tax on an imported good.

Liberty The quality or state of being free
Smuggling – the act of importing or exporting secretly in violation of law and especially without paying duty on goods.
Indentured servant – a worker who contracted for food and shelter in return for his labor.
Dissenter – one who opposes official or commonly held rules.
Economy – a system for making choices about ways to use resources to fulfill needs or wants.
A government based on a representative government is called a republic
Coming to America • The main economic reason was to be able to make a living and improve life for their family.
Colonies were not all founded by just English settlers, there were other nationalities here as well
However, the English leaders believed that the main purpose of the colonies existence was to benefit England.
By the mid 1700’s most of the colonies were very unhappy under British rule
Preachers who were part of the Great Awakening urged people to create a personal connection with God
Meanwhile, Colonists had grown tired of British rule and were now used to governing themselves with their own legislatures
The king’s governors representing the colonists did not put the colonists needs first!
The British had moved onto French land causing the 7 year French-Indian War
After the war, the British controlled all the land up to the Mississippi River
King George enacted the Stamp Act in order to raise money to pay off war debt
The Coercive Act allowed Parliament to tax the colonies and make all decisions for them.
The Coercive Act A.K.A. the Intolerable Acts were meant to serve as a punishment to the colonists for doing things like the Boston Tea Party and for resisting British rule.
The result of the Coercive Act was that it made the colonists band together to help Massachusetts challenge British authority
The actions taken by the first Continental Congress was: • To write King George and ask that britain respect the colonists rights. • To organize a total boycott of British goods and on all trade with Britain
The Second Continental Congress • Met in May of 1775 • Delegates were split on whether they should work for peace • Or to split up with Britain for good
After reading the pamphlet… • More and more delegates began to favor independence from Great Britain
Thomas Jefferson offered further proof that their social contract with Britain had been broken
The Declaration of Independence is the first official documentto give people the right to consent to their government
