  1. UK strategy for the management of wastes containing naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) Laura Kerr SEPA (on behalf of the NORM Strategy Project Board)

  2. Background • Policy for the long term management of solid low level radioactive waste in the United Kingdom – published March 2007 • UK strategy for the management of solid low level radioactive wastes arising from the nuclear industry – published August 2010 • UK-wide strategy for radioactive waste arising from the non-nuclear industry: • Part 1 - dealing with small users producing relatively low volume arisings of wastes containing mainly anthropogenic radionuclides (published March 2012); • Part 2 - specifically for high volume arisings of naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) wastes (in the process of being developed). • Scottish Government have agreed to develop the NORM strategy on behalf of UK Government

  3. Aims • Ensure that there are safe, sustainable and resilient NORM waste management arrangements in place in the UK • Identify and take steps to try to overcome obstacles preventing those managing NORM waste from contributing to sustainable economic growth.

  4. Scope • Includes solid, liquid and gaseous NORM waste • Includes radioactive contaminated land

  5. Data Collection phase

  6. The type of information we are looking for

  7. How would you like to be contacted • Letter will be issued to ‘other stakeholders’ shortly • If you would like further input please contact us at NORMstrategy@sepa.org.uk

  8. Have we missed anyone? • Looking to speak to anyone who: • May be involved in the production of NORM waste, or provide any form of NORM waste treatment/disposal services that we have not already contacted • May be unsure whether they produce NORM waste or are unaware of the legislation surrounding it • May not be involved in the production or management of NORM waste, but have another interest or involvement in the industry and would like to either share knowledge with those producing the strategy and/or be kept informed with how the strategy is progressing

  9. Next steps • Complete data collection exercise • Review of data and data analysis • Review of current UK and International NORM policy and legislation • Strategy development and public consultation • Continued stakeholder engagement Anticipated publication date – early 2014

  10. How would SNNILG like to be kept informed?
