BIEC • We are going to watch a news report about an organisation known as the British Institute of Eating Control (BIEC) • Talk partners – what is this organisation and what do they do? • Feedback after 1min as a whole class.
News Report • Watch the News Report video • What does the BIEC want to do? • Why do they want to introduce the ban, and fine? • Does everyone agree with this? • How do you know?
What do people think? • Watch the News Report video again • Make notes of what each person has to say • (the video will be paused after each interview) • Write all the points people have recorded on a large piece of paper
Fact or Opinion • What is a ‘fact’? • What is an ‘opinion’? • Highlight all the ‘facts’ on your sheet in yellow • Highlight all the ‘opinions’ in blue
Positives and Negatives Do you think the BIEC should ban the sale of foods to young people under 16? • In your groups draw to large circles on a large sheet of paper • In one circle write 5 positive things about the ban (the arguments in favour of the ban) • In the other circle write 5 negative things about the ban (the arguments against the ban)
Consequences How would you feel if you went into a shop and someone refused to sell you a fizzy drink, some sweets or a pizza and they fined your parents £1000?
Alternatives If you were given the choice how would you solve this problem?
You decide! Do you think the BIEC should ban some foods for under 16’s and fine parents £1000? • GREEN for YES • Red for NO
