2. What is Breakthrough to Nursing? The goal of NSNA’sBreakthrough to NursingProject is to: increase the number of qualified students enrolled in and graduated from nursing schools. The project was started in 1965 to address NSNA’s concerns about: • The adequacy of health care services for minority group members. • The need to increase the number of minority group health care providers (including men). • The need to provide opportunities for minority nursing students to develop leadership skills. Breakthrough to Nursing focuses on: • Recruitment/retention, minority recruitment, the number of men in the profession, young students, non-traditional students, and the need to support all enrolled in professional nursing

3. NSNA’s BTN Project Nursing: Trailblazing Pathways to Your Future 
Goals for 2010-2011: Develop and promote “Breakthrough Institute” as a collection of tools to assist in the recruitment, education, and retention of underrepresented groups.

CNSA BTN Goals • Develop a BTN Project that can be utilized by all CNSA Chapters: • This project will help build a template for BTN • Build off of NSNA’s “Breakthrough Institute” • Promote BTN on the Chapter Levels: • Educate current BTN Directors about BTN • Assist Chapters with BTN Projects • Help to establish BTN Director positions in all CNSA chapters • Utilize the BTN committee to help accomplish BTN goals • Promote Image of Nursing and Committee on Cultural Awareness Committees

6. As the recent research shows, there is an underrepresentation of minorities in the health care workforce. The registered nurse population remains far less diverse than the general population, which is one potential reason for health disparities (Martinez & Martinez, 2005).

7. Of the 2.1 million RNs in the US, 5.4% of them are male. Men also make up 13% of all new nursing students.

9. The Coalition for Nursing Careers in California (CNCC) • Health care organizations, hospital administrators, nurse educators, and nursing faculty working together to address the long-term nursing shortage in California.

13. CNSA Breakthrough to Nursing (BTN)Frequently Asked Questions  What is Breakthrough to Nursing? Breakthrough to Nursing started with the National Student Nursing Association (NSNA) in 1965. The mission is to mentor students in becoming sensitive to the diversity in our society. The program focuses on recruitment and retention of nursing students who come from minority backgrounds as well as recruiting males. CNSA focuses on developing and implementing projects to help spread the mission of BTN on the state and chapter level. How can I get involved with BTN? Become a part of BTN on the state level by joining the BTN Committee. E-mail btndirector@cnsa.org if you would like to get involved. I don’t have a BTN position in my chapter, what can I do? Start one! It is simple and a very important position. Look into your chapter bylaws and revise them so that BTN is a board position. Start to develop projects and ideas to implement in your local community that promote nursing. What can I do on the chapter level for BTN? Develop a BTN project and presentations that you can implement in your community. Get in contact with local elementary, junior high, or high schools where you can present to students about nursing. Also, seek out community events and health fairs where you can spread nursing to diverse populations and help recruit minorities and males.
