MID TERM REVIEW Contract No: ENK6-CT-2002-80659 Project Acronym: MALET Contractor: Electrotechnical Institute, Wroclaw Division of Electrotechnology and Materials Science Brussels 18-Oct-2004
WHO WE ARE ! Electrotechnical Institute, Wroclaw Division ofElectrotechnology and Materials Science (IEL/OW)is a government institution. The Institute was founded in 1948. Now it is the only one Polish R&D centre that is engaged in technology and electrotechnical materials science. • IEL/OW employs75 persons including: • 5 professors 13 doctors • 2 assistant professors 4 Ph.D students • 18 engineers • Annual budget: 1000 000 Euro (for 2003) • For example: • precision LRC meters, • chamber for thermomechanical tests, • whetherometer, • scanning electron microscope, • INSTRON mechanical tester, • HDT tester • X-Ray diffractometer, etc. • At IEL/OW we have • specialised equipmentfor: • electrical • mechanical • thermal • structural and magnetic measurementsof materials and apparatuses.
OBJECTIVES • improving state of knowledge in the field of electrotechnical materials and technologies • to establish close relations with recognised scientists from UE • to attract countries from Eastern and Central Europe and Belarusto Co-operate • to prepare and submit multinational 6th FP proposals • to establish close co-operation with industry partners and to transfer knowledge and know-how (Post diploma studies, CRAFT Projects) • to enter Networks of Excellence, • to co-operate with twinning Centres of Excellence • to make efforts in new science areas (nanotechnology, dispersed energy systems, electroactive materials)
Activities & Achievements up to now The results of the Centre MALET’s till 1st October, 2004: • submission of research projects within the frames of 6th FP (18 proposals) • stronger relations with other Centres and research institutions in EU, connection with 4 CoE from Poland, 4 NoE and 10 foreign research institutions • training of young research staff, PhD works, Master diploma studies, exchange of young researchers, organised two workshops and postgraduate study • successful transfer of new developed technologies to industry • organization of short term training for SMEs • scientific conferences: APTADM’04 International Conference (76 participants from 14 countries) and ADEL’04 Domestic Conference (64 research and industry participants) • forum of experts – conclusions for future MALET activities
Problems encountered • differences in Polish and UE law – we extensively have touse legal advices • insufficient experiences in co-operation with UE partners • some financial problems related to terms of many transferfrom EC to our Centre
Degree of satisfaction • creation the research bridge between Eastern and Western Europe • rationalization of sustainable growth process in Central European Countries in the Center activities context • new promising research areas established (nanotechnologies for electrical engineering, smart electroactive materials, dispersed energy systems, fuel cells) • participation in 5th and 6th FP • extra financial support contracted for R&D works
