Purpose for KWL • KWL allows teacher to: • 1. Elicit students’ prior knowledge on specific topics or texts • 2. Help students set reading goals for what they would like to know on the topic or what they think they will learn after reading • 3. Monitor students’ reading comprehension and level of understanding of the topic after reading the text.
Interested In Using KWL With Your Students?? Summary of procedure: • Prepare a three-column chart on the board or overhead projector and distribute the charts to your students • Start with a brainstorming session by recording all student ideas on the topic in the “K” section of the chart • Develop Reading goals by recording what students want to know in the “W” section of the chart– elicit student talk by asking questions about topic • Have students read text in small learning groups • Students record what they learned from the reading in the “L” section of the chart • Class Discussion on text and what was learned
Follow This Detailed Description! • Choose an expository text on the reading level of your students • Create a blank chart with three columns for K, W, and L on the board • Make sure all students have a copy of the chart in front of them • Ask students to brainstorm words, stories, and phrases that they associate with this topic • Teacher may have to prompt students with some ideas at first
KWL Steps Continued… • Teacher and students record these in the K column of their charts • Ask students what they want to learn about the topic • The teacher and students record these questions to the W column of their charts • Students read the text in small learning groups • Students record what they have learned in the L column of their charts either during or after reading • Teacher elicits students' responses on what they have learned by encouraging a discussion of what they have just read
