Total number of people watching bullfights in Spain each year = over 1 million Discuss why so many people? Important to culture?
Outcomes • 1. Identify the different parts of bullfighting and what constitutes each part. • 2. Summarize the important parts of each category of bullfighting on a group poster. • 3. Analyze why bullfighting, although it can seem very cruel, is so important to the culture and people of Spain.
Bullfighting • Practiced in Spain, France, Portugal, and other Spanish speaking countries. • Origins to 711 A.D.
Parts • The Bull ring • The Matador • The Bull • The fight
The Bull Ring • The first commonplace in Spain • You will find all the different social classes • Some of the seats are on the shade, some in the sun • Represents light and dark • Life and death • Day and night
Matador • AKA “Torrero” • From Latin work “Matare”= to subdue or to kill • Normally a young man • Wears a “traje de luces” = suit of lights (ultimate light) • Protagonist of the ceremony • Represents our violent nature as humans • The surviving of humans at the expense of nature
Matador • Prince of the pueblo • His position elevates him to an aristocratic level.
The Bull • El Toro • Symbol of power and life • Has become this symbol because of its fertility and strength. • Symbol of the relationship between the man and the bull through nature.
Controversy • Bring up obvious controversy over animal rights and cruelty. • Its supporters see it as an art form not unlike ballet but with one major difference. • As bullfighting aficionado Ernest Hemingway famously said in Death in the Afternoon (1932) • “Bullfighting is the only art in which the artist is in danger of death.” • Very old practice, more modernly looked at for what it represents. Most understand the cruelty.
As described by ConchitaCintron • "Within its small circle one finds life, death, ambition, despair, success, failure, faith, desperation, valor, cowardliness, generosity, and meanness—all condensed into the actions of a single afternoon or even a single moment."
What happens?- the fight • Bull is let into the ring. • Top bullfighter watches his chief assistant wave a cape in front of the bull to make it charge. • He watches to determine the bull's qualities and mood, before taking over himself.
What Happens? • Trumpet is sounded • Several fighters called Picadores weaken the bull • They place spears into it- takes around 10 minutes.
What happens? • Another trumpet sounds • Matador removes his black winged hat and dedicates the death of the bull to the president or the crowd before beginning his faena.
What happens? • The faena- the most "beautiful" and skillful section of the fight • The matador must prove his courage and artistry. • Carries a muleta= a piece of thick crimson cloth draped over a short stick • Uses Espada = killing sword • One wrong move and the Matador could become impaled on the horns of the bull.
What happens? • Matador's job to make this dance dramatic and enjoyable for the audience. • The faena continues until the Matador has demonstrated his superiority over the bull. • Once this is achieved the bull is ready to be killed.
Activity • In small groups discuss the different parts of a bullfight and what you learned IN SPANISH • EACH PERSON needs to have a summary IN SPANISH of what was learned and the separate parts • I will collect
What did we learn? • Parts: The bull ring, The bull, the matador, the fight
