Sonata Form ||: Exposition :|| mm 1-56 Starts in C major and transitions into G major Ends with a closing section in mm 52-56 ||: Development :|| mm 57-91 Working out of old themes starting in G minor, as well as a false recapitulation in mm 82-87 ||: Recapitulation :|| mm 88-147 Starts in C major and ends in C major Ultimately ends with a closing section in mm140-147
Exposition: Primary Theme • The piece begins in C major • The Primary Theme goes through mm 1-19 • The Primary Theme ends on a PAC in mm 19, and goes though a transition period into the Secondary Theme
Exposition: Secondary Theme • The Secondary Theme begins in the dominant, G major, in mm 31, and ends in mm 52 in a PAC • A Closing Section follows after the Secondary Theme from mm 52-56, ending in G major in a PAC
Development • The Development begins in mm 57 (seen in the previous slide), and ends in mm 87. • The Development starts with the Primary Theme in G minor, and plays with both the Primary and Secondary themes in multiple keys, including D minor, A minor, and C minor • At the end of the Development, a “false Recapitulation” is used, where the Primary Theme returns, but not in the home key
Recapitulation • The Recapitulation begins in mm 88 in the home key C major (Seen on the previous slide), and ends in mm 147 with a Coda • The Primary Theme temporarily turns into C minor in mm 93, but goes back to C major in mm 100. • A transition period is seen in mm 108-118, to where the Secondary Theme returns in the home key, C major • The piece ends in a PAC
