  1. “Eureka! The Importance of Good Science Writing”By: Anton Holland Rachel Davies

  2. Main Points • Why is science writing important? • How should information be presented? • Who should present the information?

  3. Why is Science Writing Important? • In the past society was small enough that scientific ideas could be easily explained/demonstrated • Now not everyone has the background to understand new scientific developments • “A survey by Northern Illinois University reported that one third of the respondents did not know what a molecule is, two thirds did not know what radiation is, and five sixths did not grasp the basics of genetic engineering. In addition, 63 percent said that dinosaurs and humans occupied the earth simultaneously, and 73 percent thought lasers focus sound waves rather than light waves.”

  4. Science Writing (continued) • The knowledge gap between scientists and other people who need this information (i.e. lawyers, normal people) requires that science writing explain the concepts thuroughly.

  5. How Should Information be Presented? • Often television and newspapers do not have enough time or space to present the information completely. • There is bias within science writing as well, and this is not always presented by the media

  6. Who should Present Information • There are often underlying issues (cultural, etc) related to scientific discoveries and advancements. • The people who explain these issues to the public need to have knowledge of both pieces to accurately explain it to the public

  7. Conclusion • Any Questions?
