Status and Gap analysis • Elementary and Middle Schools • Engineering and Technology Standards are included in the K-8 classes, but teachers are not comfortable teaching them. • There is limited Science, Engineering, and Technology equipment. • High School • A limited amount of Engineering and Technology is incorporated into the High School Science classes. • Two dual-enrollment, Introduction to Engineering courses are offered in conjunction with UMass, Lowell. • Support • There are a limited number of resources available to support the STEM program.
Goal #1: Strengthen STEm K-8 and increase student engagement • Explore Science from Scientists and determine how it can be used most effectively in Haverhill. • Promote DIGITS for all 6th grade classes. • Meet with elementary teachers during grade level meetings to discuss STEM. • Develop Google Drive as a means of district-wide communication. • Provide lists of free and inexpensive resources for teachers. • Develop MCAS review binders for 5th and 8th grades.
Goal #2: Align K-8 technology literacy curriculum with mass framework • Alignment plan must be based on the current model of using ESPs in the computer labs. • The plan will include how the technology will be introduced to the students and how it will be incorporated into the classroom instruction. • Teachers and ESPs need PD for the technology as well as the developed plan.
